A study of the mind’s defensive mechanisms that protect us from the things that aim to destroy us.
Defended explores anxiety as a protective instinct, examining the ways the mind creates barriers in response to perceived threats. Installed within a corner, the work creates an environment that viewers cannot simply observe from a distance. They must physically enter it, moving through the space occupied by these defensive forms and confronting the discomfort of entering somewhere that feels intentionally unwelcoming.
The clustered forms and their shifting shadows evoke the ways anxiety can distort our perception of danger, making threats feel larger and more pervasive than they may be. Yet these defenses exist for a reason: they are attempts to protect us from harm. Defended considers the complicated space between protection and confinement, asking when the mechanisms that keep us safe begin to keep us from moving freely.
